APRIL 2025 EMERGENCY

Mike in the hospital

On Friday, April 3rd, Mike was admitted to the hospital in Turks and Caicos with extreme abdominal pain.

Doctors determined the cause: a perforated intestine. He had gone septic, and his life was in immediate danger. But the hospital on the island wasn't equipped to perform the surgery he urgently needed.

As a U.S. citizen without active insurance, Mike had no safety net. In less than 24 hours, his community had to raise money to pay for an emergency air evacuation and secure a spot at a hospital in Florida.

Mike was airlifted out and admitted to Larkin Community Hospital in Miami. There was a deposit required to accept him.

Two abdominal drains were placed to control the infection, and he remained in the ICU for several days.

Thanks to the speed and generosity of his community, Mike made it through. He was discharged on April 12th and is now recovering in a private home in Fort Lauderdale.
